Today CNET have confirmed rumours that Nintendo would be recalling its Wii U gaming consoles from retailers. Today, GameStop have confirmed to CNET that they will be sending any unsold Nintendo Wii U consoles back to Nintendo mid-June. However, the reason for this recall is not know officially and Nintendo are yet to reveal any details on the matter to press.
The Nintendo Wii U has lacked sales since its release back in November of 2012 and this may be the reason for the recall; the Wii U has even been outsold by Nintendo’s own Wii console. The model which will be recalled in mid-June is the 8GB basic bundle. While no other retailers have confirmed a recall it is likely to effect more than one retail outlet in the United States.
The reason for the Wii U’s poor sales is undoubtedly down to both the support from developers and the overall experience of its gaming capabilities. Since it was released Nintendo have also lacked any form of marketing; they appear to have put all their marketing resources into the initial release. The Wii U was also hugely rumored about and expectations were higher than the reality of Nintendo’s flagship gaming device.
While the console has had limited success in certain markets around the world the Wii U is certainly considered a failure when compared to Sony’s and Microsoft’s flagship gaming consoles. Nintendo is likely to reveal more information about the recall in coming weeks and the team here at Your Gadget Guide will provide further information on the matter as it is provided.
